Charging cost is easier to understand when you separate the battery’s stored energy from the electricity drawn at the wall. The number on a battery label is a starting point, not a promise about your monthly bill.

Electricity tariffs, taxes, meter arrangements and building charges can change. Use the current rate on your bill or confirm it with your electricity provider instead of relying on an old online figure.

The basic battery estimate

If the battery label gives nominal voltage and amp-hours, estimate stored energy as:

Watt-hours (Wh) = volts (V) × amp-hours (Ah)

Convert to kilowatt-hours by dividing Wh by 1,000. For example, a 60 V, 30 Ah pack is approximately 1,800 Wh, or 1.8 kWh. This is an energy estimate, not a guarantee of usable range or wall consumption.

Allow for charging losses

Some energy is lost in the charger, wiring, battery-management system and heat. A practical estimate should multiply the battery energy by a loss allowance rather than assuming every unit from the wall enters the cells.

Use a plug-in energy meter only when it is correctly rated and safe for the charger. A meter reading over several normal charges is more useful than a single unusual session. Never put an unapproved meter, adapter or extension into a wet or overloaded connection.

From energy to cost

Once you know the wall energy in kWh, use:

Charging cost = wall energy (kWh) × your current electricity rate

If your bill has tiered rates, demand charges, building fees or a shared meter, the simple calculation may not match the final bill. Record the total bill method used by your household and compare a normal month with a month of scooter charging when possible.

Estimate cost per kilometre

For a useful comparison, record energy used and distance over several similar rides:

Cost per kilometre = charging cost ÷ kilometres travelled

Include realistic conditions such as rider weight, speed, traffic, hills, tyre pressure, weather and battery age. A short, flat test with a light rider should not be used to promise the same cost on a heavy, hilly commute.

  • Charging from very low or very high state of charge may behave differently.
  • Heat, rain, hills, traffic, speed and extra load change energy use.
  • Tyre pressure and brake drag can increase consumption.
  • Battery ageing can reduce distance from the same charge.
  • Shared building or office charging may include a separate service or access charge.

Compare with petrol fairly

Compare the same route and period. For petrol, record fuel volume and price; for electric, record wall kWh and the applicable rate. Include maintenance, documents, parking, battery risk, oil, filters, tyres and service when comparing total ownership rather than only energy.

  • Keep tyres correctly inflated and brakes free from drag.
  • Use the correct charger and avoid repeated inefficient short tests.
  • Charge in a safe location during the normal routine allowed by the manual.
  • Do not use an unsafe extension, altered charger or unapproved battery to lower cost.
  • Track energy and distance monthly so a sudden change is noticed early.

The most useful charging-cost number is measured from your wall, route and current rate—not copied from a battery label or an old tariff.
